Connect Square to Register
Last updated October 21, 2026
If you already use Square, Register can send card payments to a Square Terminal. Riverr keeps your products, orders, and customers. Square only takes the card payment, and the money goes to your own Square account.
New to Register? Start with Using Register.
What you need
- A Square account that is activated for payments. If Square shows an activation notice, finish it at squareup.com/activate first.
- A Square Terminal. The small Square Readers that pair to a phone don't work with Register yet.
- At least one location in your Square account. Locations are created in Square, not in Riverr.
- Admin access in Riverr.
Step 1: Connect your Square account
- Go to Settings → Integrations and choose Square.
- Click Connect. Square's sign in page opens.
- Sign in and approve Riverr.
- You return to Integrations and see Square connected with your business name.
If you see Square connection was canceled, the approval was declined on Square's page. Click Connect and try again.
Step 2: Point a store at Square
- Go to Settings → Register → Stores and open the store.
- Under Payments, set Payment provider to Square.
- Pick the Square location for this store. If your Square account has one location, it's picked for you.
- Click Save store.
Step 3: Pair your Square Terminal
- Turn on the Square Terminal and connect it to wifi. It stops at a sign in screen.
- In Riverr, open the store's register and click Add Square Terminal. The sheet shows which Square location it pairs to.
- Riverr shows a code with a 5 minute timer.
- On the Terminal's sign in screen, choose to sign in with a device code and enter it.
- Riverr switches to Paired and shows the Terminal on that register.
If the timer runs out, click Get a new code. Codes from the Square Dashboard won't work. Use the one Riverr shows.
Step 4: Take a payment
On a Square store, every card option in Register goes through Square. Stripe isn't needed.
- Card, tap or insert: ring up the sale and tap Charge. The amount appears on the Square Terminal, the customer taps, inserts, or swipes, and Register shows Paid.
- Card, key in: for phone orders. Square's secure card form opens in Register. Type the card and tap Charge. No Terminal is needed.
- Send payment link: Register emails the customer a Square payment link. When they pay, the order is marked paid automatically, or tap Check payment.
If the customer walks away, tap Cancel on Terminal. If the Terminal doesn't respond, check that it's on and connected, then try again.
Cash and pay later still work on Square stores. They don't go through Square.
Refunds
Open the order in Register and click Refund. Refunds for Square payments go back through Square to the customer's card. Refunding a payment doesn't need the Terminal.
Disconnecting Square
Go to Settings → Integrations → Square and click Disconnect. Every store using Square switches to Setup, and card buttons turn off until you reconnect or switch the store to Stripe. If you remove Riverr from inside your Square account, Riverr notices and does the same.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Square isn't in the Payment provider list | Square isn't connected yet. Connect it under Settings → Integrations. |
| "Pick a Square location for this store first." | Choose a location under the store's Payments section. |
| "Reconnect Square in Settings → Integrations to allow payment links." | Your Square connection is from before payment links. Disconnect and connect Square again. |
| The Terminal says the code is invalid | The code expired or was already used. Click Get a new code. |
| Can I use Stripe at one store and Square at another? | Yes. Each store picks its own provider. A single store uses one provider for cards. |
