Using Register
Last updated October 21, 2026
Register is the counter till inside Riverr. Use it to ring up walk in customers, sell items off the shelf, and take made to order jobs, all in one sale. This guide walks through setup once, then what staff do every day.
How Register is organized
- Stores are your physical counters. Each store has its own tax rate, receipt details, payment provider, and registers.
- Registers are the tills inside a store, such as Front counter or Back counter.
- Devices are the tablets or computers set up to run a register.
- Staff unlock a device with their PIN. Staff never need an admin login to sell.
Part 1: Set up (admins, one time)
1\. Create a store
- Go to Settings → Register → Stores.
- Choose a store, or click Add store.
- Fill in the store name, timezone, and tax rate. For the address, start typing in Search for the store's address and pick the match. Riverr fills in the street, city, state, and ZIP.
- Choose a warehouse if items sold here come from a specific warehouse.
- Turn on Active and click Save store.
2\. Choose how this store takes cards
In the store's Payments section, pick a payment provider.
- Stripe: pick a Terminal location for this store.
- Square: connect Square first, then pick a Square location. See Connect Square to Register.
Cash and pay later always work, with or without a card provider.
3\. Add registers
- In the store, go to Registers and click Add register.
- Name it, for example Front counter.
- To take cards, open the register and add a card reader:
- Stripe: click Add reader and type the pairing code shown on the reader's screen.
- Square: click Add Square Terminal and enter the code Riverr shows on your Square Terminal within 5 minutes.
Registers are never created automatically. If a store has no register, staff can't open Register there.
4\. Add staff
Everyone is added in the Invite a teammate card on Settings → Team.
Counter staff who only run the till:
- Choose PIN only.
- Enter their name and a 4 to 6 digit PIN.
- Under Register stores, choose All stores, or Selected stores and tap the stores they work at.
- Click Add teammate.
PIN only teammates have no email or password and can't reach the admin. They show in the team list with a PIN only badge. Click the pencil to rename them, set a new PIN, change their stores, or remove them.
People who also sign in to Riverr: choose Email invite. Full admins can open Register automatically. For Member or Custom access, check Register in the permission list, or their PIN won't unlock the till. Riverr gives every teammate a PIN. Click Show next to their name to see it.
To limit a store to certain people, open the store and set Who can open Register here to Only selected staff, then pick them.
5\. Set up each tablet or computer
Every device that runs Register is set up once by an admin. No admin password is ever typed on the shop floor.
On a tablet or a staff computer:
- On your admin computer, go to Settings → Register → Stores → \[store\] → Devices and click Set up a device. A QR code and a 6 digit code appear. They work for 10 minutes, one time.
- On the tablet, open your admin address followed by
/posin a normal browser window, not a private one. Or scan the QR code with the tablet's camera. - Enter the code, pick the register, name the device, and click Finish setup.
- On Android and computers, click Install app when asked. Register then opens full screen from its own icon.
On an iPad or iPhone: open /pos in Safari, follow the steps to Add to Home Screen, then open Register from the home screen icon and enter the code there. Setup done in Safari doesn't carry over to the home screen app.
On your own admin computer: open /pos while signed in and click Use this computer as a register. No code is needed.
Part 2: Every day (staff)
Open the till
- Tap the Register icon, or open
/pos. - Enter your PIN.
- If the device isn't tied to one register, pick your register.
The till locks itself after a few idle minutes. Locking only signs you out. The device stays set up, so the next person just enters their PIN.
Ring a sale
- Add items.
- Off the shelf: scan the barcode, or search and tap the product, then pick a size.
- Made to order: tap Custom order to build a decorated item.
- Add a customer if needed. A customer is optional for in stock items and required for made to order items.
- Charge.
- Card, tap or insert: the amount goes to the card reader and the customer taps or inserts.
- Card, key in: for phone orders. Type the card number into the secure card form. It uses the store's card provider, Stripe or Square.
- Send payment link: emails the customer a link to pay. The sale is saved as waiting on payment and finishes when they pay. Tap Check payment to refresh it.
- Cash: enter the amount handed over, and Register shows the change.
- Pay later or deposit: available when the sale includes made to order items.
In stock items are ready right away. Made to order items go to production, and the customer gets an art request if artwork is needed.
Give a receipt
After payment, Register asks how the customer wants their receipt.
- Email: enter or confirm their email and tap Email receipt. Riverr sends it from your shop.
- Text message: enter their mobile number and tap Text receipt. If the button says Text from this device, texting isn't set up for your account yet, so Register opens this device's Messages app instead. That only works on a phone or a tablet that can send texts.
- No receipt: skip it and start the next sale.
If a customer walks away
Tap Park to save the sale and pick it up later, or Cancel on Terminal if the card reader is waiting.
Switch store or register
Tap the Store and register button at the top of the till. Your open sale is parked first.
A device stays with the store it was set up for, so staff only see that store's registers. To move it, unlock the till with an owner or Full admin PIN, open Store and register, pick the other store and a register, and tap Move device to \[store\]. Only stores with at least one register are listed.
Managing devices
Go to Settings → Register → Stores → \[store\] → Devices to see every device, the register it runs, and when it was last used. Click Remove to stop a device right away. It returns to the setup screen on its next use.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Card buttons are greyed out | The store has no card provider, or its register has no reader online. Check the store's Payments section and the register's readers. |
| "This store doesn't have a register yet." | An admin needs to add one in Settings → Register → Stores. |
| "That code didn't work." | Codes expire after 10 minutes and work once. Ask an admin for a new one. |
| The tablet asks to be set up again | It was removed under Devices, or the browser's data was cleared. Set it up again with a new code. |
| A PIN is rejected with "Register isn't part of your access" | They have Member or Custom access without Register. Check Register for them on Settings → Team. |
| An unpaid order says the card was charged | The card went through but the sale didn't finish. Open the order in History and tap Finish card payment. The card isn't charged again. |
| Text from this device does nothing | This device can't send texts. Use Email for the receipt. |
